Sore nose season: 7 common mistakes parents make (& how to avoid them)

Is your child’s lip balm making it worse? A dermatologist advises.

Sniffles, sneezes, and endless nose-wiping may feel like part of the parenting package in winter. But sore, red skin around your child’s nose doesn’t have to be inevitable.

“The skin around the nose and mouth is thinner and more delicate, which makes it more prone to damage from repeated wiping, ” says Dr Lauren Knight, a Cape Town-based dermatologist and mother of two. “Once the skin barrier is impaired, it can become dry, inflamed and more vulnerable to infection.”

The good news? A few simple swaps can make a big difference. Here are six common winter skincare mistakes Dr Knight sees parents make – and how to avoid them:

1. Using rough or scented tissues
Friction and fragrance are fast tracks to irritation.
Fix it: Choose ultra-soft, unscented tissues and gently dab rather than rub. Follow up with a protective balm, like LETIbalm, with lanolin and cocoa butter.

2. Applying adult balms
Many adult balms contain ingredients that worsen irritation in kids. Not all lip balms are safe for children.
Fix it: Use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic or formulas tested under paediatric control, such as LETIbalm Paediatric (for ages 3 + months).

3. Relying on single-action moisturisers
Just moisturising the skin isn’t enough. The skin needs added protection, and hydration needs to be sealed in.
Fix it: Choose a dual-action balm that hydrates, protects and supports repair, like LETIbalm.

4. Not applying balm often enough
Winter skin needs consistent care.
Fix it: Reapply balm to the nose and lips several times a day, especially after eating or wiping. Keep in your bag for on-the-go top-ups.

5. Overusing antiseptics or steroid creams
Parents may reach for antiseptic or cortisone creams, which may worsen irritation.

Fix it: Unless prescribed, skip medicated creams. Use gentle, repairing balms with ingredients like Centella Asiatica, vitamin E and shea butter.

6. Thinking barrier care is just for adults
Children’s skin is thinner and more reactive, making skin barrier support even more important.
Fix it: Choose barrier-protecting products formulated for kids, like LETIbalm Paediatric Nose & Lip Repair.

7. Ignoring allergy or infection signs
Recurring redness may not be from more than just wiping. “If your child has seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis, or a secondary infection, a balm alone won’t solve it,” says Dr Knight.

Fix it: Seek medical guidance if symptoms persist.
