From Brushes to Business

Carina Pereira’s journey is rooted in passion, purpose and empowerment, from backstage glam to business growth. As a seasoned make-up artist, educator and founder of Carina Pereira International, she’s redefining beauty education by creating inclusive spaces where women are encouraged to thrive.

Your journey began with a dream role at MAC Cosmetics. What were some of the biggest lessons you learned there that helped shape your path as an entrepreneur and educator?
Working at MAC Cosmetics laid the foundation for everything I do today. Hosting MAC Technique classes taught me to break down complex skills and connect with diverse audiences. The brand’s culture of celebrating individuality helped me embrace authenticity in artistry and business. I learned to listen, adapt and confidently lead. At the same time, the fast-paced environment taught me to be resourceful and solution-driven. All of that shaped the educator and entrepreneur I’ve become.

Many people dream of working in the beauty industry, but few take the leap to open their own school. What inspired you to create Carina Pereira International?
After years in the industry, I saw a gap, so much talent but not enough nurturing, ego-free learning spaces. I wanted to create something different. Carina Pereira International was born from a passion for both beauty and empowerment. My goal was to build a space where artists feel seen and supported, where community matters more than competition. Hosting MAC classes showed me how education can spark confidence and I wanted to pass that feeling on. This academy is more than a school; it’s a safe, inspiring place where we can grow and rise together.

Your academy offers flexible learning and international certification. How important is accessibility in your mission?
It’s absolutely essential. Many of our students are juggling family, work, or financial constraints, so flexibility is key. We designed our programs to meet women where they are, and with internationally recognised certification, our graduates aren’t limited. They can freelance locally or work abroad, from destination weddings to super yachts. Empowering women through education means providing them with real options and the confidence to shape their own futures.

You’ve worked with celebrities, on fashion weeks and major shoots. How do you bring that experience into your courses?
I bring my students with me! Whether it’s a fashion show or a campaign shoot, I believe the best way to learn is through hands-on experience. Our courses are designed to reflect real-world standards and I regularly share behind-the-scenes insights to prepare students for what to expect. Working in fast-paced, high-pressure environments has taught me a lot and I want my students to graduate with more than just skills. I want them to leave with real experience and industry readiness.

When did your passion for makeup and hair first begin?
It started young. My mom always gave me the most fabulous hairstyles, which gave me early confidence and sparked my interest in beauty. I also grew close to our family hairdresser, who encouraged me to pursue a career in hair. However, I quickly realised cutting and colouring wasn’t quite my passion. My mom suggested I explore makeup and we’d often visit MAC before special events. That’s where the spark turned into something bigger. Two weeks after completing my makeup training, I landed my dream job at MAC, full circle!

Your courses welcome everyone from beginners to aspiring professionals. What advice do you have for women who are hesitant to start?
Just go for it. My dad always told me, “Go for things. If you bump your head, you can get back up.” That mindset has stayed with me. With the proper training and support, there’s so much potential, whether it’s a side hustle or a full-time career. This industry rewards passion and consistency. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect moment.’ Start, keep learning and permit yourself to grow.

Your hairstyling course feels exceptionally approachable. Why was that important to you?
Because hairstyling can feel intimidating if you’ve never been trained, I wanted to create a course that feels achievable from day one, where techniques are broken down simply and confidence is built step by step. Everyone can learn and grow. When students feel empowered, they don’t just improve their skills; they also start believing in themselves.

With trends constantly changing, how do you keep your curriculum current and industry-relevant?
I stay plugged into the industry, whether working with brands like G-Star RAW, attending shows, collaborating with Swiitchbeauty, or travelling to explore global trends. These experiences helped me keep our content fresh and aligned with current events. However, beyond trends, I also focus on timeless techniques and professional standards that will remain relevant.

What does success look like for you personally and in the lives of your graduates?
Success, for me, is seeing my students thrive. It’s not just about handing out certificates; it’s about creating a bond, helping them build confidence, and watching them step into their power. Many of my graduates join my makeup agency, where I assist them in finding work and advancing their careers. True success is seeing them believe in themselves, whether they go solo, work backstage, or build a beautiful side hustle.

For women wanting to level up their everyday beauty routines, what’s your go-to tip for flawless results?
For makeup, skincare is everything. Keep your skin hydrated and prepared, and your makeup will last significantly longer. And for hair? Dry shampoo is a secret weapon. It adds texture, boosts volume and helps styles hold without heaviness. Simple but game-changing!
