Time to GLOWUP

Just three key products – an effective exfoliator, a potent vitamin C serum, and a well-formulated sunscreen – can dramatically enhance your skin texture, minimise uneven skin tone and hyper pigmentation, and pave the way or a flawless and radiant complexion.

Regular exfoliation is key if you want bright and clear skin. By promoting cell turnover, exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, enhancing natural luminosity and making the skin
softer and smoother. Exfoliating helps unclog the pores, reducing the risk of breakouts while ensuring the treatment products you use after exfoliating – like serums and moisturisers – penetrate deeper and
work more effectively in the skin. Exfoliating two to three times a week can help reduce the appearance of
dark spots and uneven pigmentation, giving the skin a vibrant and youthful glow.

The Acid Test
“Most dermatologists prefer chemical exfoliants over physical scrubs”, says Cape Town-based dermatologist Dr Lauren Knight. She goes on to explain how chemical exfoliants utilising alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) penetrate deeper into the skin, gently dissolving dead skin cells at a molecular level. “They just provide a more even and effective exfoliation”, says Knight. “AHAs work to effectively dislodge dead skin cells on the surface while boosting hydration levels and making the skin appear plumper. On the other hand, BHAs penetrate deeper into the pores, helping to unclog them and reduce acne, while also providing anti-inflammatory benefits,” she explains.
“Physical scrubs can be abrasive and cause damage to the skin if you’re not gentle enough,” cautions Knight.
In addition to their superpower exfoliation benefits, chemical exfoliants can also increase collagen production, making them a more holistic option for achieving a radiant complexion.

TRY THESE
Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, R895 for 118ml bottle, is a daily leave-on liquid exfoliant with Salicylic acid that unclogs and shrinks pores while evening out the skin tone.

The Powerbright Dark Spot Peel from Dermalogica, R1,999 for 50ml, has been shown to lift surface hyperpigmentation visibly like UV-induced dark spots, post-blemish marks and melasma in just five

It works to exfoliate the skin deeply; restoring radiance, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, decongesting pores and minimising the appearance of dark spots. This serum can be used on all skin types for a clearer,
healthier complexion.

Out Damn Spot!
One of the best ingredients to even out skin tone and improve texture is Vitamin C. A powerful ingredient for reducing hyperpigmentation, Vitamin C inhibits melanin production, helping to lighten spots and brighten the overall complexion. Additionally, it is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin by neutralising free radicals while supporting skin repair and reducing the signs of ageing.

WE LOVE
Avène Vitamin Activ Radiance Corrector Serum, R770 for 30ml, boosts luminosity, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, enhances skin firmness and diminishes the appearance of dark spots. This formula uses Ascorbyl Glucoside, a derivative of vitamin C that is gentler and better tolerated by sensitive skin.

Safe Sun
Sunscreen is your main line of defence against harmful UV rays. A broad-spectrum sunscreen can help prevent premature ageing and reduce the risk of sun-induced skin damage. It’s important to protect your skin daily, especially when using chemical exfoliants or Vitamin C, as these ingredients enhance cell turnover and increase skin sensitivity, making it more vulnerable to UV damage. Remember, the best skincare won’t make the slightest difference if you’re not protecting your skin against the sun’s onslaught.
