Your Support Makes all the Difference to People Living with Autism

Awareness of autism and the impact it can have on people’s lives is growing all the time, but there is still a long way to go. Thanks to Jozi 4 Autism and their headline sponsors – Elenjical, Neurodiversity Centre and Freeway Toyota, and event partners – Autism South Africa (ASA), Caring Women’s Forum and FEED, residents of Johannesburg can take an important step towards autism awareness and acceptance at this year’s Autism Walk.

Jozi 4 Autism is a local NGO with a track record of advocating for neurodiverse people, and campaigning for their rights and contributions to be recognised.

Taking place on Sunday 6 October, the Autism Walk 2024 is also an opportunity to explore the tranquil setting of Johannesburg Zoo at an especially beautiful time of year, with the famous jacaranda trees in full bloom.

Even more incentive to take part can be found at the coffee and street food stalls, while the dedicated play area will keep younger visitors entertained. This year’s theme is ‘Different Umbrellas, Same Sky’ – a concept that speaks to people’s different perceptions of the world around them, and of the need to protect each other from what can feel like a downpour of prejudice and misunderstanding.

With the Autism Walk beginning at 7:30am, the afternoon heat and rain showers shouldn’t be a problem. Bringing an umbrella along is therefore completely optional, but it’s a great way to show support for the cause.

Tickets are just R100 per adult and R50 per child, with kids aged under 3 able to take part for free. Tickets are available through Quicket, and 100% of the proceeds from the event will be used to support Jozi 4 Autism’s vital work. People who care about this important cause can also show they care by visiting the Jozi 4 Autism online store and buying and wearing their stylish clothing and merchandise.

“Following the success of last year’s Autism Walk, we’re delighted to be returning to Johannesburg Zoo for another celebration of diversity and unity,” commented Sumaya Babamia, Speech-Language Therapist, Audiologist and Director of Jozi 4 Autism. “This event is one of the highlights of our year, as it combines a fun family day out with some serious fundraising,” she added.

“If you have an autistic child in your family, or you know a family with a neurodiverse member, we’d especially love for you to join us,” commented Tasneem Abrahams, Occupational Therapist and Director of Jozi 4 Autism. “By creating opportunities for autistic and non-autistic people to interact, we can break down barriers and eliminate prejudice,” she added.

“At Jozi 4 Autism, we’re very conscious that the combination of autism and tight budgets being experienced by many South African families can be particularly challenging. This makes our Autism Walk even more important as a way of raising much-needed funds and demonstrating solidarity,” explained Karen Gouvelis, Website Creator, Founder of Strange Duck and Director of Jozi 4 Autism. “We’re aiming for a record turnout this year to enhance our ability to make a difference,” she added.
